About the Lecture

The story of the Titanic is one of history’s greatest maritime tragedies—but it also opens a window into one of Earth’s most mysterious environments. Join Dr. Young as he shares footage from the groundbreaking IMAX film Titanica and behind-the-scenes stories of the pioneering expeditions that first brought the famous wreck to the public.

Then dive beyond the Titanic to explore the remarkable cycle of life and death in the deep ocean. Drawing on more than 40 years of research aboard the submersible Alvin and other deep-sea expeditions, Young reveals how countless marine animals produce thousands—even millions—of offspring, most of which never reach adulthood. Far from being wasted, these eggs provide a vital food source that helps sustain ocean life from the seafloor to the surface. Through stunning imagery and fascinating discoveries, you’ll gain a new appreciation for the hidden processes that keep the deep ocean alive.

About the Speaker

Craig Young is Professor Emeritus of Biology at the University of Oregon and former Director of the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology. An internationally recognized marine biologist, his research has focused on the reproduction, development, and ecology of deep-sea animals, with more than four decades of exploration using submersibles including Alvin. Young has participated in dozens of oceanographic expeditions around the world, helping uncover how life thrives in one of Earth’s most extreme environments. His work has advanced our understanding of deep-sea biodiversity, hydrothermal vent ecosystems, and the remarkable life cycles that sustain the ocean. He also served as a scientific advisor and expedition leader for the IMAX documentary Born in the Abyss.
