The Philip Glass Ensemble was founded by Philip Glass in 1968 in New York City as a laboratory to develop the performance practice of his music. The group debuted at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1969 and has since been the primary interpreter of Glass's works, touring internationally and recording for labels including Nonesuch and Orange Mountain Music. Michael Riesman has served as the Ensemble's music director since the mid-1970s.
